Summer is here and it’s the start of vacation for many! Vacation is your time to relax and enjoy!! Below are some tips to ensure you are protecting your data while you travel.

TIPS

1. Back up all files before leaving the office – this is a critical step should you need to restore or recover anything.

2. Update your software before you travel – check for any software and security updates on your devices. Those prompts are there for a reason – don’t ignore them! Be sure to run the updates while your device is plugged in and securely connected to the internet.

3. Bring your own Portable Chargers, Power Cords, and Adaptors – malware has been found at airport kiosks, public charging stations, and even hotel lamps! If you MUST use one of these, power down your device before connecting to any public option.

4. Avoid Free/Public Wi-Fi Hotspots – avoid all fee or public Wi-Fi networks as they are unlikely to be secure, like that rental car you authorized to use your phone! If you do need to connect to Wi-Fi when traveling, always connect to the Internet via a VPN.

5. Turn Off Auto Connect for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi – ensure your portable devices do not automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks and turn off Bluetooth connectivity.

6. Passwords – be safe and remember to change the password to any accounts you access while traveling, especially overseas. The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) suggests passwords should be more than 10 characters and should include numbers, letters (upper and lower case), and symbols. Make sure that all of your passwords are strong and enable multi-factor authentication on any accounts that offer it. This means that when you log in, you have to verify that it is you, or if a hacker tries to get into your account, you are notified by the second means of communication (i.e., a text with a code).

7. Use different PIN numbers – always use a unique PIN number for each of your devices. Never reuse a PIN anywhere else, such as on the hotel safe.

8. Protect your Primary Phone Number – if you are using your phone number for account identification purposes, be careful about giving it to strangers. In order to safeguard yourself, you can use a temporary SIM card and number.

9. Lock-Up Devices – ensure all devices that are left out in the open are locked up and secure. Use the hotel safe if there is one present. Don’t leave your laptop unattended while you sip your morning coffee in the hotel lounge or by the pool – it just takes a few seconds for theft to occur!

10. Never Leave Devices Unprotected – if you cannot lock a portable electronic device in a safe, take it with you. Any possible hiding spot in a hotel room will be checked by thieves. Devices should only be transported in carry-on or handheld luggage.
