Compliance and Privacy Program Overview
Travis County & HIPAA
The Travis County Compliance and Privacy Program was created to ensure that the County adheres to state and federal laws that regulates what is known as Protected Health Information. Some departments at Travis County are covered entities under HIPAA rules. Travis County is a hybrid entity. HIPAA Privacy and Security rules don't cover every line of business at Travis County, just the departments or divisions that actually deal with protected health information.
HIPAA is the acronym of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA and its regulations protect the privacy of an individual's health information and govern the way certain health care providers and benefits plans collect, maintain, use and disclose protected health information (PHI). These regulations establish standards for protecting individually identifiable health information and for guaranteeing the rights of individuals to have more control over such information.
State Laws
Although your program may not be covered by HIPAA, it might be covered by state laws. If you handle medical records that are not related to FMLA or workman’s compensation, and you are unsure of whether or not state law applies to you, you should contact your supervisor or the Compliance and Privacy Officer.
